Spanning everything from desktop calendars, planners, database and spreadsheet to paint programs, sql and games these are small programs, easy downloads, yet flexible and interesting and some are infinitely useful.
WRitten primarily for WIndows 95 and 98. most work well in Xp and XP pro as well.

Find Free Downloads for Windows XP
The term "freeware" means different things to different people. In this column, I refer to freeware as any software that can be legally downloaded and installed without requiring any additional payment.

Top Downloads from Microsoft
Some of the best free downloads come from Microsoft, which offers free downloads that extend the functionality of Microsoft software that you've already purchased. Microsoft has a wide variety of software that you can download and install for free on your Windows XP-based computer.
For a complete listing of free downloads from Microsoft, visit the Microsoft Download Center.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search....?displaylang=en

Where to Find Freeware?
Finding free downloads on the Internet is easy. Finding quality freeware is not as easy. There are several Web sites that organize and review freeware for you.
http://www.tucows.com/

http://www.download.com/

Not all the products that these sites offer are free, but they do distinguish freeware from shareware and commercial applications.

Note: Most freeware is safe. However, you should be running an up-to-date virus checker before installing anything on your computer.

There are several great sites that catalog just freeware, including Freeware Home, Freeware Guide, and WinSite. Generally, the author of the freeware needs to submit a request to each site to have their software listed. For that reason, not all the sites have the same software. If you don't find what you're looking for at one site, keep looking.

http://www.freeware-guide.com/
http://www.winsite.com/free/

If you find freeware that claims to be for Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows ME, you can probably install it on your Windows XP-based computer. If you have problems, use the Program Compatibility Wizard to change settings. To run the Program Compatibility Wizard:

1.
Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Program Compatibility Wizard.

2.
Follow the wizard instructions to select the program's .exe file, choose a compatibility mode, set display options, and then test the program again.

Sometimes, the best way to find freeware is to use your favourite search engine. Be sure to include the words "download" and "freeware" in your search. For example, if you're looking for an application that shows the current temperature on your taskbar, you should search for the phrase "weather taskbar download freeware".

A search for "Windows XP utility download freeware" turns up my favourite site for freeware system tools: Sysinternals, which has many free tools that let you look under the hood of Windows XP.

Uninstall Freeware
If you enjoy the process of finding and exploring freeware, you'll definitely encounter freeware that you don't find useful or entertaining. You should uninstall it to free up space on your hard disk and keep your computer from becoming cluttered.

Freeware
category listing Freeware Site.

Hi,

Freeware is copyrighted computer software which is made available for use free of charge, for an unlimited time, as opposed to shareware where the user is required to pay (e.g. after some trial period or for additional functionality). Authors of freeware often want to "give something to the community", but also want credit for their software and to retain control of its future development. Sometimes when programmers decide to stop developing a freeware product, they will give the source code to another programmer or release the product's source code to the public as free software.

Take a look at Free Software Directory (http://freesoftwaredirectory.net/softwaredirectory/) from this site we can Download scripts and software including freeware, shareware, demoware, trial ware and commercial software from the Free Software Directory.

So i hope this helps you out in finding some advice on freeware.
